The serum was successful and granted Omar enhanced strength, agility and stamina. He became an agent of the Six American Warriors. However, realizing that racial tensions would not allow for a black superhero, Daniel Lyons was thought to be the man behind the mask. The fact of the Black Marvel's true identity was kept a secret from many officials in the government as well as his teammates.
After the loss of Captain America, Omar took the Captain's shield as a keepsake as retired his superhero identity. He went on to become a scientist and college professor, devoting himself to conducting research to save Captain. Omar also served as a teacher and mentor to Robbie Robertson.
After Captain America disappeared with Red Skull, Omar and the remaining Six protected the doomsday device.
