    Earth Day 2017

    Today is Earth Day. It is a day celebrated worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection as well as the role science plays in our everyday lives. It was first proposed in 1969 and first celebrated in 1970. The day is now observed worldwide in almost two-hundred countries with some areas celebrating the entire week.

    George Takei Turns 80

    Today is the eightieth birthday of George Takei. Primarily known for his work as Hikaru Sulu in the Star Trek franchise, he voiced Wong on Spider-Man, Galactus on The Super Hero Squad Show, and the elder monk on Ultimate Spider-Man.

    Today marks the fifteenth anniversary of the release of The Scorpion King. The film was a spin-off and prequel to the previous year's The Mummy Returns. It follows the titular character, who was the villain in the previous film, as he stops an evil tyrant. It was a moderate box office success and divided critics though spawned three sequels of its own. The film features the talents of Michael Clarke Duncan as rebel leader Balthazar and Kelly Hu as the sorceress Cassandra.

    Today is the release of Teen Titans: The Judas Contract. This is the twenty-eighth feature in DC's animated original movie series and a sequel to last year's Justice League vs. Teen Titans. This has had the longest development process, originally intended to be the third film but delayed due to initial lack of interest. It follows the famous 1984 story where Teen Titans' villain Deathstroke plans to take down the team using a mole on the inside. The film was directed by Sam Liu and features the talents of Kari Wahlgren as Starfire, Miguel Ferrer in possibly his final role as Deathstroke, Crispin Freeman as Speedy reprising his role from Young Justice, as well as David Kaye doing additional voices.

    Billy West Turns 65

    Today is the sixty-fifth birthday of actor Billy West. The actor has long worked in voice acting, singing, and on the radio working on numerous films, television shows, video games, and commercials. Some of his most famous roles include Stimpy on The Ren & Stimpy Show, the title character on Doug, Bugs Bunny beginning with Space Jam, Philip J. Fry and many others on Futurama. He would be known to Marvel fans as the voice of Rocket Raccoon on the Ultimate Spider-Man episode "Guardians of the Galaxy".

    Today marks the seventieth anniversary of the Cold War, a state of geopolitical tension between powers in the Western Bloc like the United States of America, United Kingdom, and their NATO allies and the Eastern Bloc like the Soviet Union, its satellite states, and China. There is no official start of the conflict. It was on this date in 1947 that businessman and political analyst Bernard Baruch described the tensions as a "cold war" as there was no actual conflict going on.

    Today would have been the ninety-fifth birthday of actor Michael Ansara. Ansara rose to fame in the role of Cochise on Broken Arrow. Soon after he began dating and eventually married I Dream of Jeannie star Barbara Eden. He starred in Law in the Plainsman as well as appearing in several well known works like The Ten Commandments, Perry Mason, The Outer Limits, Lost in Space, The Fugitive, and Mission: Impossible. He is one of nine actors to play the same character on three different Star Trek series having played the Klingon Kang on the original series, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager.     Sony Pictures Animation has found its Miles Morales for the upcoming animated Spider-Man film. Shameik Moore has been announced to be cast as Miles Morales while Liev Schreiber will play the unknown villain of the story. Moore is known for his staring roles in Incredible Crew, The Get Down, and Dope. Marvel fans will remember Schreiber as Victor Creed/Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and other works like the Scream trilogy, The Omen, and Ray Donovan.

    Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film is still set to be released December 21, 2018.
