The Chitauri are an alien species. Their invasion of Earth was lead by one who would call itself Herr Kleiser. One of their ships crashed long ago in the nation of Wakanda. Kleiser attempted to get the ship back but they were stopped by the Wakandans' technology. Kleiser became very powerful among the humans during World War II, but was stopped by Captain America. S.H.I.E.L.D. was tasked with stopping their threat. When the Chitauri destroyed a satellite of theirs, Nick Fury formed the Avengers. Their first mission was to stop the Chitauri from destroying a base of theirs, but they failed. The Chitauri then attacked S.H.I.E.L.D.'s main base and the Avengers repelled them with the help of Hulk and Thor.
Kleiser returned to Wakanda and killed T'Chaka, the king of Wakanda and Black Panther. T'Challa then asked Cap's help. The Wakandans repelled them so the Chitauri got their command ship to destroy the Avengers' ship. The command ship then laid siege to Wakanda and surrounded the planet with an energy field. They sent Walkers and Fliers to attack the humans. The Avengers arrived and helped the Wakandans. Iron Man and Giant Man entered the command ship and destroyed it, but at the cost of Giant Man's lift. Iron Man then prevented the command ship's debris away from Wakanda. Black Panther and Captain America managed to kill Kleiser.

The Chitauri uses the Ultimate comic versions' name. In other comics and media they are called Skrulls. They also use the Ultimate alien designs.
