It was initially founded as CBC Film Sales Corporation. It became Columbia Pictures in 1924, named after the personification of the United States.
It was initially a minor studio in Hollywood. It grew in size thanks to director Frank Capra. At the time, it was one of the "Little Three" of studios in Hollywood's Golden Age.
It currently is one of the "Big Six" major American film studios. It is the world's fifth largest major film studio.
