The Imperial Guard, also known as the Praetorian Guard, are the protectors of the Shi'ar Empire.

History

When D'Ken took over, the guards protected him against the X-Men and Starjammers. They were then loyal to Lilandra and fought the X-Men after the Phoenix Force.

Background

Currently the only animated version of the team.

In "Promise of Apocalypse", Gladiator calls the group the Praetorian Guard. This is derived from the elite warriors of the Imperial Roman Army who served as personal bodyguards of the emperor. The Imperial Guard of the comics were never called this, and there is a group of human mercenaries affiliated with Richard Fisk and Hobgoblin that uses the name. It is unknown whether this reference was a deliberate reference to their real life parallels or if it was simply an error in the script.
