This year is the forty-fifth anniversary of the debut of Sauron, who first appeared as Karl Lykos in X-Men #59 in August and as Sauron in X-Men #60 in September. He was originally intended to be a bat-like energy sucker, but censorship issues against vampires forced the dinosaur-like appearance. Since his debut he has been a thorn in the X-Men's side constantly going between ally and villain, been involved with Weapon X, and joined the Brotherhood of Mutants and most recently the Hellfire Club. The character first appeared as a recurring villain on X-Men, made a guest appearance on Wolverine and the X-Men, and most recently made several appearances on Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.
