Today is the two-hundred eighth anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. The sixteenth President of the United States of America Lincoln's election launched the American Civil War. Through his leadership, the Union was preserved, slavery in the country was abolished, he strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy. He was also the first president to be assassinated. Today he is regarded as one of the greatest leaders in the nation's history with his likeness on the penny, five dollar bill, Mount Rushmore, and a massive memorial in Washington D.C.. His birthday is also a national holiday.
